It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of Fergus O’Toole. Fergus, who many will know from his time on the Finance Committee and through his many fundraising activities, will be truly missed by the entire school community. In many ways he typified the partnership that exists between parents, teachers and students here in Crescent. He put so much time and energy into the major fundraising events he organised each year, doing so not for personal gain but because he believed so profoundly in what this school is all about. The debt this school owes to Fergus can never be repaid. His commitment, energy and skills have enabled us to invest heavily in the school facilities and in this way Fergus’s life touched and will continue to touch every student who passes through the school.

As a parent he was hugely supportive of the work of the teachers and almost constantly expressed his gratitude to his children’s teachers as well as the principal, deputy principal and all who work here in Crescent. Above all he will be missed for his pleasant smile and the constant up-beat greetings, greetings that he shared with all of us when he visited the school. We mourn his passing as we would a colleague.

Our thoughts are with Vicki and the children. The partnership that Fergus worked so hard to maintain can now benefit his family as the school community offers our prayers and support to Fergus’s wider family and especially to his wife and children.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

The award was presented to John Randles, SCT Captain by Donal Lenihan at the Muinster Rugby awards ceremony last Sunday.

In 2009-10 Crescent College SJ celebrated its Sesquicentenary Year commemorating 150 years of Jesuit education in Limerick. Crescent’s 151st year his has been a wonderful year for Rugby in the school. In addition to a strong showing by the Seniors in the Blackrock Sesquicentenary Cup and the Avonmore Munster Senior Cup Crescent won its first Junior Cup title in almost 20 years with victories over P.B.C, Glenstall and Rockwell culminating in a 17-13 win in the final over a talented C.B.C side.

The Junior Cup final victory on March 24th crowned a long season of success across the age groups. Squads drawn from a crop of nearly sixty first years who trained each week performed strongly throughout the season and produced rugby of the very highest standard in the various blitzes and 7s tournaments they played. In the older age groups this season’s haul of trophies included victories in the Limerick City Cup U19 (Crescent 11 – St Munchin’s 3) the Limerick City Cup U16 (Crescent 22 – Glenstall 10), the Kidney Cup Junior XV (Crescent 11-P.B.C 5 and the McCarthy Cup U15s (Crescent 20 – P.B.C 5.

These victories are the culmination of the combined efforts of talented and hard working players and the collaboration of parents, coaches, managers and teachers. Throughout the season Crescent Rugby has been noted for its honesty and flair.

Last Sunday evening at a ceremony in Thomond park Jojhn Randles, Capt of the school Senior Rugby team accepted the award as a tribute to the players and as a testament to the cooperation of parents, teachers and coaches. We are indebted to the Munster Branch and to the many volunteers who support, referee administer and steward the school game. Above all we welcomed this award on behalf of the players from Under 13s upwards who have given their all and who have developed as people as they have grown to love the game of rugby.

It was with deep regret that the Crescent community learned of the death of our grounds man of almost forty years, Mr. P.J. Brennan. P.J. transformed the grounds of Crescent from a building site in the 1970s to one of the most impressive school grounds in the country today.

In his homily, Fr Jim Maher S.J. spoke of P.J.’s commitment and work ethic; his commitment as a parent and husband; his work with Fr. Billy Troddyn S.J. to purloin every clipping and bulb in the Limerick region in order to grace the grounds of Crescent; his consideration for the students by doing his work early in the morning and late in the evening so as not to disturb their lessons and examinations.

P.J.’s monument is the grounds of Crescent and he is survived by his son, Patrick.

The motto of Crescent is ‘Crescentes in Illo per Omnia’ which translates ‘Growing in Him through all things’ and that word ‘growing’ has particular relevance to the man himself. The ‘man for all seasons’ was not a teacher, he did not have a degree, he was the grounds man. Crescent teaches that God is present in our lives and the teachers have the theory, the lesson plans, and the books to do this. One of the great phrases in Jesuit education is that ‘the world is charged by the grandeur of God’ and the teachers are sometimes challenged by having to teach this. In reality all that has to be done is to ask the students to look out the windows of the school and see. God has the grandeur but someone has to do the work and despite all the expertise in the school, P.J. was and is and will always be one of the most inspirational educators who have graced Crescent College Comprehensive S.J.

P.J.’s funeral mass concluded with the following reading:

‘Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there, I do not sleep.

‘I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

‘When you wake in the morning hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

‘So, do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there, I do not sleep.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there, I did not die.’

Slan abaile, a chara, sleep in the good night, beir bua.

The Jesuit Superior General, Fr Adolfo Nicolàs, has appointed Fr Tom Layden as Provincial of the Irish Jesuit Province. Fr Layden (pictured above) will take up office on July 31st, the feast of St Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits. Fr Layden is 52 years old and has worked for the past 12 years in Belfast.

Born in Dublin, Tom Layden lived in Keadue near Boyle in Co Roscommon until the age of 12 when he went to school in Clongowes. It was there that he first encountered the Jesuits and joined the Order in 1979. “I remember the big step it was for me when I entered the Order and looking back I am so glad I took the risk and tried out this way of life. It has been a wonderful way of living and serving. I am sure there are men out there who will find this is the path for them also. We want to let them know that we are here and interested. It has been encouraging to see three men from Ireland enter our novitiate in Birmingham last September.”

His family moved to Greystones, Co Wicklow in 1972. Fr.Layden studied history in UCD and theology in the Toronto School of Theology. He says there are many needs in the Irish Church today and Jesuits want to play their part in the process of renewal that is badly needed.”So many of the issues, spiritual hunger in young people, a thirst for justice in society, giving religion its place in a changing world, are not unique to Ireland but are to be found across Europe also. I am just back from a visit to the Jesuits in the Netherlands who are small in number but enterprising in spirit. In these Easter days we remember how the Risen Lord put new heart into the disciples who had been devastated by his suffering and crucifixion. In the Church we are invited to let the Risen Lord heal us and invite us to new ways of working together as laity and religious to allow God’s reign of love and justice break in upon us”

As Provincial Fr Layden will guide the work of around 170 Irish Jesuits and in addition to working in Portadown and Belfast, Irish Jesuits and their colleagues are engaged in a variety of different works including seven schools, spirituality centres, a centre for Faith and Justice and a special project in Ballymun (JUST – www.justballymun.org) to help people access 3rd level education. They are part of a consortium of orders which run the Milltown Institute of theology and Philosophy. “I am delighted to be appointed and am a peace within myself about this new mission”, says Fr Layden. “Of course I am also somewhat apprehensive about the challenges ahead but I know that the encouragement of the Holy Spirit and the support of my fellow Jesuits and of all those who work with us will help me to fulfil all the tasks ahead.”
Irish Jesuits serve as missionaries (http://jesuitmissions.ie) in Zambia- Malawi, Cambodia, Singapore, Japan, the US and Hong Kong. Here in Europe they work in Brussels, London, Liverpool, Munich and Rome. Two Irish Jesuits are currently working with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS - www.jrs.net) in Congo and in Rwanda.
