We would like to draw your attention to the fact that our school rules function primarily for two purposes; to facilitate student learning and to ensure the safety of the school community. When we implement or change a school rule the purpose is always to address an element of one or both of these areas.
The rationale behind withdrawing parking privileges from the students was to eliminate the health and safety risk associated with students parking on the school grounds. We believe that by doing this we have made the school grounds safer for the entire school community. It would have been remiss of us to ignore the very real concerns, raised by many parents and by the Parents’ Council regarding the health and safety of our students, as a result of not only the number of students driving to school at critical times but also their manner of driving. Similar concerns have been raised by school staff. The school’s health and safety officer along with an outside professional carried out a review into student parking in the school. It was felt that for students (in general recently qualified and inexperienced drivers) to park on school grounds they had to drive through the most potentially dangerous area of the school and that student parking was hindering access for emergency vehicles.
In recent years we have seen a big increase in the number of students requesting permission to park in the school. It is unusual for schools to provide parking spaces for students, and, though we have been able to grant this privilege up to now, we feel that we cannot ignore the concerns that have recently been highlighted.
We regret any inconvenience that this may cause but we must, however, keep the welfare of the entire school community at the heart of all our decisions, even when occasionally these decisions may cause inconvenience to a group or individuals within the school.
