December 2019

Dear all,

I write to send you best wishes for the Christmas season and wish you and your families every comfort and happiness.

As we approach the end of 2019 we can reflect on an exciting and productive first term in Crescent College Comprehensive SJ.

At our Christmas assembly on 11 December we were entertained by our school orchestra and choir, we heard from our hockey and rugby captains and were led in prayer by our school captains. The theme of the assembly was charity, and all were reminded that charity is a virtue and an act of love. Two TY students gave a summary of the charity work undertaken by students during this first term. I never fail to be impressed by the young people we have here, their generosity of spirit and their energy. Indeed on Santa Hat day alone students and staff raised €1000, and on Friday 13 December our sixth year students participated in a ‘sleep out’, and our TY students will help with flag days in town. We were delighted that some of our ‘fast friends’ were present for assembly and enjoyed their Christmas party in the Central Area afterwards.

Our First Years are well and truly settled in and our Transition Years hosted a Christmas dinner in the Canteen to mark the end of an eventful term for them with regard to work experience, fast friend work, and an excellent production of My Fair Lady to name but some elements of their programme. Second and Fifth years have begun their Christmas exams which will be good indicators of their progress ahead of PT meetings in January; and of course our Third and Sixth years are powering ahead in their preparation for their Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations. Many will avail of the Christmas supervised study package in the school or will work at home, but it is also vital that they allow themselves a proper break from work for at least 7 days of the Christmas holidays. The Pre- Leaving and Junior exams begin on Monday, 3 February 2020.

I hope that this Advent period has been special for you, though as we were reminded during our Christmas Assembly, this can be a difficult time for some families, who may have suffered the loss of a loved one, or are experiencing health, relationship or financial worries. During Advent we held morning prayer each morning and on Friday 13 Fr Jim Maher SJ celebrated Mass in our school chapel. We are enormously privileged to have Fr Jim and the other members of the Jesuit community as part of our school life, and I am grateful to them for all their support for the staff and students of Crescent.

On behalf of all in Crescent I would like to wish you a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful and joyful New Year.

God bless,

Karin Fleming
